Fancy Colored Diamonds Trends For 2016

December 28, 2015 9:13 am

It’s the end of 2015 and its time to ask, what new styles and trends can we expect to see in 2016? This past year we saw a rise in popularity with fancy colored diamonds. The main auctions from the large auction houses highlighted these beautiful and rare stones. The excitement for these stones show us that 2016 will be the year of the colored diamond. After tracking colored diamond sales, Barron’s has revealed that the category has risen “142% in the past ten years.” With huge interest in fancy colored diamonds, what styles and colors can we expect to see this coming year?

Investors are very interested in these rare stones. They are always looking to purchase unique items and a rare colored diamond fits the bill. These diamonds will increase in value over time, making them the perfect investment. They are much more rare than a white diamond, and they more commonly have internal flaws. There is also no direct source for fancy colored diamonds which means there is not a regular supply. However, if you want to see a return on your investment you need to purchase the larger and more expensive colored diamonds.

The preferred colors of the year are pink and blue. At a recent auction two fancy colored diamonds were bought for incredible prices. A 12.03-carat vivid blue diamond was sold by Sotheby’s for $48.4 million and a 16.08-carat vivid pink diamond was purchased at a Christie’s auction for $28.5 million. Both were bought by Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau as gifts for his young daughter.

What were some of the top pieces at the auctions this year?

The Blue Moon Diamond, purchased by Joseph Lau was auctioned off at Sotheby’s auction in Geneva on November 11, 2015. This diamond is internally flawless and is considered to be one of the rarest gems in the world.

This beautiful fancy intense pink diamond was auctioned in June at Christie’s Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels auction. The 9.07-carats internally flawless rectangular diamond was mounted by Harry Winston and surrounded by sparkling triangular-shaped white diamonds.

And a highlight at Bonham’s June 2015 Hong Kong auction was

this step-cut fancy vivid yellow diamond. The 22.57-carats

diamond is brilliantly flanked by 1.30-carats of white diamonds.

How are fancy colored diamonds being incorporated by jewelry retailers?

Pink diamonds are a favorite in engagement rings. Some of our favorite celebrities have received pink diamond engagement rings and we can expect to see more in 2016. Make sure to do your research to find the best quality fancy pink diamonds.

Jewellery Point offers this beautiful entwined engagement ring with a fancy purple-pink diamond center stone. White accent diamonds highlight the color of the center stone for a beautiful eye catching ring.

Another winner from Jewellry Point is this fancy blue diamond halo ring. The beautiful blue stone is surrounded by a dazzling halo of white diamonds. And the split band adds an unexpected and charming twist.

Colored diamonds accent more than just engagement rings. This exquisite bracelet from Lebish & Co. is magnificent with rubies and fancy pink diamonds. The stones are set in white and rose gold with a filigree scroll motif and includes round brilliant white diamonds.

Tiffany & Co. also has some beautiful pieces highlighting colored diamonds. This incredible necklace features an exquisite hand-cut yellow diamond. The pear shaped yellow diamond exudes warmth from the yellow gold setting and chain.

Fancy colored diamonds are the trend of the season and will continue to be popular in 2016. They dazzle both as investment pieces and spotlighted in jewelry. What is your favorite colored diamond?
